Reasoning
with Arithmetic
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Would “Reasoning
with Arithmetic” be appropriate for a student who needs extra
help? Click
for Answer
A: This book is helpful for the student who has trouble understanding
math and for the student who learns quickly. They will both appreciate
learning the “whys”.
A: Review is only a tool used towards the goal of mastery. The
exercise reviews will help the students to remember what they have
learned in previous days. Once they learn a concept, it is not
necessary to continue to review on a daily basis. All concepts
will be reviewed after every 10 lessons.
A: The decision to test is left up to the individual teacher. There
are enough exercises that, at any point, one of the exercises may
be used as a test. If the student makes 100%, do not have him
do anymore similar exercises until the next review (every 2 weeks).
He is ready to go on to the next concept.
Q: What kind of manipulatives are required
for “Reasoning with Arithmetic”? Click
for Answer
A: Manipulatives provide an important tool for developing
an understanding and mastery of arithmetic. However, the author
leaves the number and variety of manipulatives to the discretion of
the individual teacher. The author does not feel it absolutely
necessary to implement a wide variety of manipulatives to gain a mastery
of Arithmetic. Beyond the counting sticks (popsicle sticks),
when a student learns by reasoning precept-upon-precept, there is not
a huge need for manipulatives of all types.
